Most amazing instructor ever! Chip has a gift for making you just "get" Jiu Jitsu and runs his gym differently than any I've ever tried out. Need more proof, just go read the testimonials on his website!

First post failed...so let me say this again. I have trained with people from all parts of the world in various arts. Chip is among the very beat I have ever encountered. He is a noble man and honorable in everyday. He is a perfect mix of technical precision, dedication, flawless instructions and a natural leader among warriors. Chip always says he is blessed to "have" Bjj. I say Bjj is blessed to have Chip...as we all are.

This man Loves to teach, he Loves to see people be enthusiastic about jiu-jitsu and you honestly couldn't ask for a better mentor. He's a perfect role-model for kids and adults alike. He says exactly what is on his mind, and luckily for us what is on his mind is always positive. He's a great friend, an amazing martial artist, and always a huge motivation to get to the gym and train as hard as you can. If you let him, he will bring out the best in you.

Not only is Chip a great instructor, but his passion for this sport is unlike anyone I have seen. He always has a way of capturing his audience when he teaches, weather it is children or adults. He inspires people push themselves individually, at the same time bringing us together as a team. Coffey BJJ is much more than a gym, we are a family!

Chip has World class skill, but his greatest gift is the ability to pass this knowledge on to others. He has a deep respect and appreciation for BJJ, and you see these same virtues instilled in his students from day one. Whether you're a pro fighter tightening up your ground game, or an elementary school student building self confidence, having the opportunity to train with Chip Coffey will make you a better Martial Artist, and more importantly a better person.

I'm new to training in this sport/way of life, in my short time around Chip, I've learned so much in training. From day one, he has treated me with upmost respect as if I was already a Black Belt. I've had the privilege to be around some great leaders, Chip is at the top of the list, if you don't believe it, just come to our class and you can feel the respect/energy in the room when he walks in. Awesome!!

Chip is a great instructor, athlete, and role model to look up to. Whatever reason you have for doing BJJ, whatever level you want to acheive, you will always be his favorite student. Put simply, he loves Jiu-Jitsu and loves spreading his knowledge of it. His attention to detail in his teaching methods shows just how knowledgeable he is, and his positive influence on the people he comes in contact with is something you wont find many places. It's an honor to train with Chip, but he would probably say the honor is his.

So I'm 47. Before looking into Coffey BJJ, I never had a lick of martial arts training, nor a wrestling background. I have a desk job, a busy schedule, and a paunch that's fighting hard to make a permanent settlement on my mid section. Most guys my age are dropping their kids off at the Kid-Jitsu classes. So what the heck is a guy like me doing here? That's easy. Jiu Jitsu is a metaphor for life: sometimes you cruise along, sometimes it throws you for a loop, and no matter what your age or how well you do, it's always humbling. Every time I train I'm reminded that life requires equal measures of mind, body and soul; blood, sweat and tears; planning, preparation and creativity. So, who cares if I'm 47? I'm not dead yet! And so long as I live I want this daily, metaphorical reminder of how to roll with life's blows. It goes without saying that without excellent instruction, the above mentioned would just be an exercise in frustration. Chip Coffey, Sean Dyer, and Manu Ntoh are the best of the best. They're refined technicians, champion practitioners, passionate about their sport, and extraordinary teachers. With their help (and the help of my outstanding team mates), I'm staying healthy, learning a great set of skills, and having loads of fun. Like I said before, Jiu Jitsu is a little slice of life and Chip Coffey expresses his world through it. He does it naturally, organically. He couldn't help it even if he wanted to; it's in his blood and it's who he is. Every day I walk out of a training session, I take a little of his Jiu Jitsu with me out into the world. I'm stronger, less stressed, and I roll with life's ups and downs a little more easily than I did before. If Jiu Jitsu is like life, Chip Coffey wants to make sure yours is a good one. Come roll with us. Rick Gomez Current Student

We are so lucky to have Chip Coffey in Cartersville GA. Most people have to drive into a big city to find someone with the credentials of Chip and that doesn't mean they will have the same passion and love for teaching Jiu Jitsu like Chip does. We are really lucky and spoiled. If something happened to Chip, I don't think I could train under anyone else. I would probably quit Jiu Jitsu.

well there isn't much that i can say that hasn't already been said but, chip is one of the greatest guys i know, he is one of the most inspirational people and like others have said he's like a father figure figure to me. he drives me every time i see him to give my best and push as hard as i can. like when i am competing, the only thing i can hear is him saying "lets go Garrett push it don't slow down lets go. he doesn't just instruct jiu jitsu, he engages with all his students and friends and makes the gym a home away from home and when the gorillas at Coffey BJJ say that we are a family they're not exagerating at all. i don't know where i would be with out him and look forward to learning more from him.

I am a 43-year-old, female white belt. I must say Chip is PATIENT! How many extraordinarily skilled practitioners would take the time and be interested is such a lost cause! He lives and loves his art, and it shows. A year after a small, female group training session with him, we are still using his terminology , like "frame up" and "bad intentions!". We all know what that means--a whole set of technical skills, and a joke imbedded in there, too.....

28. Submitted by Nat Bomar on Sunday February 12, 2012 12:22 PM
Chip Coffey is an incredible instructor, mentor and person. His passion for BJJ and helping people advance in this field is contagious. In many schools there is a disconnect between the belts, but he creates an environment of openness and help to all students. He takes a personal interest in each student and works with them individually. There is an immediate connection with any new students as they are welcomed to the school and treated as though they were family. Having trained in several martial arts and worked with quite a few instructors, I feel extremely lucky to have found such a great place to study these martial arts, like Coffey BJJ. Thank you Chip for your hard work and dedication to your students.

I have been doing grappling since age 6-7 and had many different instructors. Chip is a new breed of professors that focus on the students and not their own names. Chip has a way to always know his students in a way that he can apply his teaching to each individual case. Even in big classes, he is quick to identify when a certain body type is struggling with a certain technique, and immediately apply "twitches" to make the certain move work to each and everyone of us. His positive energy has been changing peoples lives everyday in and out of the mats. Chip, eu te amo meu irmao!!!

I can't say anything that hasn't already been said about Chip. I am honored to call him my instructor and friend. I have been training for several years and have been at Coffeys for the last 3 months. I have never experienced this level of training or the feeling of being a part of a jiu jitsu family. I have never seen an "ego" problem with anyone at this gym. I have always been treated with respect and absolutely love it here. I look forward to many years training here.

Chip has so much to offer his students and families related to students. Chip enriches lives across the board. As you learn his techniques and his respect for the sport you see a raw passion and love for all things Jiu-Jitsu. Chips dedication and respect for the sport overflows onto the people of the sport which in turn builds a great environment to train. Even after one session, his students grow leaps and bound above other gyms.

Chip keeps no secrets when he shows technique. He is always tweaking moves and helping us to consider different angles and progressions of moves. Since I started BJJ with Chip, my grappling style has evolved. One time "concepts" are now actual implemented tools in my game. Plus, I've eaten one of his big right hands while listening to Otis Redding, and rolled three or four ten minute rounds to the music of Led Zeppelin. Where else do you get that? Really?

I'm surprised no one has commented on how strong Chip is! He is the reason his logo is a Gorilla! The scale says he weighs 175 pounds but when he's in side mount you'd swear he weighs 600 pounds! He effortlessly man handles everyone in the gym, even guys 100lbs heavier than himself.

I have never met an instructor more dedicated to the sport he loves & his students all in one. His positive attitude radiates through out his gym and through his people. Each and every time I walk away from one of his classes I feel that I have ended my day with a positive, uplifting message. He is not a man that has to demand respect. People just simply want to respect Chip for who he is. I look forward to many more years training under Chip Coffey. I wish every day could start and end with one of his classes.

I have been privileged enough to train with some good instructors in the past and being around the sport for a little while I've heard of Chip Coffey and his school, so when I recently moved to Cartersville I immediately wanted to meet with him and give his school a try. From the first time I spoke with him you can see not only his knowledge and how humble of a person he is, but also the respect he gives to the art and everyone that is around him. I can honestly say from the most recent student all the way to the staff on hand that I've personally met, Chad and Sean, you immediately see the very high quality of everyone, the respect everyone gives each other and how close everyone is. I believe it is a direct reflection on the instruction that's given. Chip seems to have a way of rubbing off on people to where they have a desire to do their best, not only for themselves but for him and for every teammate because of the standard he sets. I feel very blessed to be a part of this program and to have someone with the quality of a person on and off the mat as Chip to be around and learn from.

I met Chip in 2009. I was coming to Macon, and I had low hopes of finding a jitsu gym that would fill the shoes left in Boston. After a web search, I came upon Coffey Jiu-jitsu may fill those shoes. Barnesville is about 45 minutes from Macon, but there were no jitsu places in Macon, and no authentically trained black belts from a renowned Brazillian for sure. I called the gym to stop by for a trial and i knew i hit a homerun when chip took a few minutes to talk to me. he loves the sport. he lives it and breathes it, and for that, he respects anyone who shows interest in the sport. he was just so plain enthusiastic and passionate about jiu-jitsu. the gym itself is absolutely beautiful and sparkling clean (a must when you need to avoid staph and ringworm). the students ranged from white belts to black belts, but what was so noticeably encouraging was the lack of attitude. too many gyms nowadays are full of hotheads, but you don't learn anything there except maybe how you can try to kick someones butt at the local bar. chips students welcomed me, shaking my hand, and encouraging me plentifully during our rolling drills. unfortunately, due to scheduling for my work and location of the gym, i was unable to join. but from someone who has been to so many MMA gyms, you can tell right off the bat when you've found a good one.

Chip is a fantastic role model and never ceases to teach us more and more every class. He is always very enthusiastic when he teaches and us kids are always very motivated to learn more. My dad, my sister and I have been going to CoffeyBJJ for about a year now and we are always happy to go to the gym and learn new moves.

Being relatively new to Bjj, Chip has a way of making just about anything make since. Having an instructor of his caliber is a real blessing. Chip's attitude, enthusiasm, and most if all his integrety makes training under him an honor.

Chip is hands down the most respectful person I have ever met. He is extremely dedicated to not just the sport, but the adults and children he trains. My 10 year old son started training with Chip about a year ago, at the time my husband and I were having a hard time channelling his energy in a positive route. Chip met this challenge head on. What has come of that has been an amazing school year with great grades and a sweet respectful child ( most of the time ) that will kick some butt on the mats! The Lord has for sure given this man a great gift to help others in many ways. The truth is that Chip and the many other instructors in this Gym are 100% dedicated and committed to building great character and competitors.

I have known Chip since 2005. Chip is the best instructor I have ever trained with, hands down. Knowledgable, honest, humble and professional. You can't go wrong with this guy.

I found my way back to Professor Coffey last year as an 8 yr student of BJJ, having known him for a long time and been honored enough to even train under him briefly before, it was the best decision I've every made during my BJJ journey. It should be on every BJJ Practitioners bucket list to roll with him at least once, you have to feel his shoulder pressure to believe it, it cannot be explained...I've had the honor of being awarded my Brown Belt by Professor Chip Coffey, a honor that I am at loss for words to put into perspective, it truly is something I will carry with me all my days. He gifts all of his students with the respect and honor that comes from just telling people you train under him, a respect that he has earned by his years of devotion and dedication to the sport and teaching the sport, sheer talent and humble nature...plus he just plain wrecks people on the mat, period, believe that! GORILLA FOR LIFE!!!!!!

Chip has taught me so much the past few years. I first went in to the gym sorta lost, but ended up with a ton of great friends and a family. I feel very blessed being a part of Coffey bjj and knowing Chip. He won´t let you go a stray. He always encourages you to show up. One of the best people I have ever met. The jujitsu sport boggles my mind, and you can count on Chip to be there as a possitive guide.

Chip Coffey is an awesome person first and foremost. He also happens to be an excellent BJJ instructor. The culture and atmosphere that he has built at Coffey BJJ is second to none. I consider myself privileged to train with and learn from him and those he has taught.
